Orion Pictures, distributor of Hoosiers, held special screenings of the movie for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in January 1987, before the movie’s national release. Orion also placed several “for your consideration” advertisements in Variety. The distributor hoped Hoosiers would be nominated for at least one Academy Award. These efforts paid off, as Dennis Hopper was nominated for best supporting actor, and Jerry Goldsmith for best original score. Hopper also was nominated for a Golden Globe.
