New Richmond residents were invited to attend meetings before filming began in their town. There they asked questions, aired concerns, and learned what to expect from the production.
Everyone appearing as an extra was required to sign an agreement card.

Knightstown’s sneak preview was held in nearby Greenfield.
The Indiana House of Representatives honored Hoosiers in March 1987.
Posters were placed in the filming-location towns to encourage people to show up and be extras in the production.
The Huskers’ game schedule was printed and placed in Hickory store windows as a set decoration. Wampner’s was the feed-and-grain store owned by troublesome townsman George, Buddy’s father.
